Rules of Pai Gow Poker

Pai Gow Poker is slightly different to other poker games and is quite suited for those looking for poker at a slower pace. As well, if a player is new to gambling they might especially enjoy Pai Gow Poker since one can play for just a minimal amount of money.

Each player gets dealt 7 cards after they have placed their bets. A dice is usually rolled to determine which player will get dealt the first set of cards. Players then arrange their 7 cards in a 5-card hand (ranked the same as in for a game of poker) and a 2-card hand (either a pair or two individual cards; highest being a pair of aces, lowest a 2 and a 3). The dealer then arranges their hands. Their 5 card hand is compared to the players, followed by the 2 card hand. If there is a tie between dealer and player, the banker gets it. Lets say a player beats the dealer on both hands, he or she wins even money (but having to "pay" a 5% commission), but if the player only wins one, the bet is a push. Losing both means the player will lose the whole bet. In a case in which the 2 card hand is higher than the 5 card hand, both automatically lose as it is a foul.

Banker in Pai Gow Poker

Players are allowed to take turns being the banker and in this case, the dealer will still play and must bet the same amount to the last bet the player made when the dealer was banking. Players usually want to be the banker as the 5% commission is charged after losses are set against winnings. But players can only elect to be the banker if they have enough money on the table to pay of all winning bets from all other players and the dealer. One can improve their winning chances too by being the banker - work out the ratio of what is bet when you're a banker versus what is bet when you're a player as the greater the ratio, the better your odds are of winning.

The Joker in Pai Gow Poker

The Joker can be used to complete a: straight, flush, or straight flush. If it can't complete one of those hands it is seen as an ace.

Winning Pai Gow Poker

One factor that can help one win Pai Gow Poker is how well they arrange their cards. There is something called the "house way" which seems to work as well as any betting strategies can work. This means different things for different combinations, so if you're interested in following this theory, learn about how to arrange your cards if you have: no pairs, one pair, two pair, three pair, three of a kind, three of a kind twice, straights, flushes, royal flush, full house, full house with three of a kind and two pairs, full house with three of a kind twice, four of a kind, four of a kind and a pair, five aces, four of a kind. It is very important to learn how best to arrange your cards if you want to develop any kind of chance of a winning strategy for Pai Gow Poker.
